Several years ago the Clipper Cafe at Shaldon used to be a little bit, shall we say, the wrong side of grotty. Not shabby or full of character, just a bit past its sell by date. It closed down a couple of years ago and has just opened after a serious revamp. Wow. They have really gone to town. It is now enormous with outdoor seating on two levels and two really spacious eating areas inside. So far I've only sampled a cup of tea and delicious home made heart-shaped shortbread, but it's definitely going to become a regular haunt. I'm dreaming of eating crab sandwiches with a chilled glass of white (yep, they're licensed) in the summer on the patio overlooking the Teign estuary.

what a great job on the revamp! I remember going there in my teens a few years *ahem* back, it was in need of a spruce up then. Such a perfect setting for a good cafe, Shaldon in the sunshine is hard to beat. Add an al fresco glass of vino and that's a winner for sure.
Looks good. Like the mini shortbreads served with tea as well as the larger ones - nice touch. We really ought to get over that way some day. I seem to remember you reviewing the cafe a couple of years ago and bewailing the fact it had closed, but I expect I've got that wrong. Might have been one in Teignmouth.
Looks really nice, strange that 2 new cafes are opening in Shaldon in such a short space of time.
That view though is stunning, hopefully they will offer some great cake! for me to try.
chilliandchai - well I think you may have been and sampled the cafe revamp for yourself very recently...
Choclette - it's an OK cafe but I think it's mainly the view you go for - the food menu doesn't look very innovative or particularly home made. You're half right - it was the Michaelmas Goose that closed down in Teignmouth (over the river from Shaldon) and has now become Cafe Twenty Six - good for French good quality food and pastries.
Matthew - actually three new/updated cafes as the one along from the Ferryboat has also been completely done up (can't think of its name!. I haven't been to that one yet, but it's got seating right on the beach, so good for all those hot summer's days that we ARE going to have.
